In 1972 was born Josephine, the first American Hairless Terrier out of a litter of purebred coated Rat Terrier. The breeder was Edwin Scott, from this female he began developing the breed. He used only Rat Terriers in his breeding and his intention was to develop a separate breed. When in 1999 the United Kennel Club recognized the Rat Terrier breed, Scott and his fellow breeders accept to let the hairless dogs enter the UKC registry as Rat Terriers but hairless variety. After separation of all hairless Rat Terriers and all their coated descendant, resulting from the breeding to the finest specimens of Rat Terrier, the name originally chosen by Scott for the new breed "AMERICAN HAIRLESS TERRRIER" was given on January 1, 2004. In UKC it is now a separate recognize breed under the name AMERICAN HAIRLESS TERRIER. The American Hairless Terrier born with a coat are know as American Hairless Terrier, coated variety.

HOW IS IT AS A BREED

The American Hairless Terrier is a dog fill with curiosity and intelligence, energetic and alert. This is a breed easy to train but demand a strong leadership from the master. They were bred from a long line of hunters but are use now mainly as pets, the hairless is not suited for hunting because of his bare skin, but the coated can be use for hunting mice, rats and others. This breed enjoy the company of humans immensely.

GROOMING

There is not much grooming in this breed except for keeping ears clean, cutting nails if needed and emptying anal glands. For those who never touch the hairless variety, it's a soft feeling like touching a peach. For the coated variety the touch is pleasing, easy to brush, never make felt. This is an easy care breed for those who like the companionship without the grooming.
