Use clean water in a clean bowl

Give a quality dry food, adapted to your dog. Your animal must have firm stool and in small quantity. Make the difference between soft stool ( a dry food not adapted to its needs), and a diarrhoea which is a state of disease. A dog in a state of diarrhoea can dehydrate rapidly and died (consult a veterinarian to fix this problem fast).

All dry food are already well balance, do not add vitamins unless your veterinarian tell you to do so.

Dogs usually drink in the morning and in the evening. Give a full bowl of water and dry food in the morning and in the evening. Leave these bowls during 25 minutes to give the animal time enough to eat without hurrying and after this time remove the two bowls till evening. Do the same thing for the evening meal, after 25 minutes you remove the bowls.

A meal produce 2 defecations. The first evacuation will happen in the 5 to 15 minutes. The second evacuation will be related to age:

Puppy of 2 months = 2 hours after meal

Puppy of 4 months = 4 hours after meal

Puppy of 6 months = 6 to 7 hours after meal

Your approach is important

You must use a serious voice, bossy and firm, without yelling, without violence.

You see your animal in action, peeing and defecating. You take the animal in your hand as fast as possible ( the animal will stop because it is surprise).

You say “out” and you bring it out, always going through the same door and you put him always at the same place. You let it empty itself.

As soon as it is done, you must congratulate him, using a happy voice with the word “good dog” or “bravo”. Never give him a food reward but only a key word which express your satisfaction, which will give him self-assurance to continue its persistence in being clean.


Your tools for training

The plastic carrier, the fence, the enclosure.

These are all tools which will help you to put your puppy or dog clean. They can be use alternatively or you can use only one of those tools.

The puppy must never be free when alone in the house, or when your are busy and that you cannot give him time. Alone in a large space like an apartment or a house, he will enlarge his territory. This means that he will pee and defecate all over the place to mark his territory.

The plastic carrier or the cage must be high enough that the head will not touch the top when the animal stand up, and long enough that the dog can lay without stretching. The space must be a bit limited. If the dog dirty inside, it will not be pleasant for him and it will learn to hold itself till you arrive.

If you choose to use a fence, choose a corner in your house and place your fence in a manner to form a triangle. Remember that the space must be limited. Your animal must not be comfortable in its urine and stools. But he must be able to lay without stretching.


How long does it take to put a puppy clean ?

Depending of the age of your puppy and of your persistence. This can take from one week to one month. Do not bring home a 2 months’ old puppy, it doesn’t understand much and it just want to link to an affectionate individual, it just left the mother, so it needs to replace this caring mother. A 3 months’ old puppy is ready to learn and will understand better what you are expecting from him, before this age the pup can be scare because it doesn’t understand what you want out of him and you could develop submission peeing.


Things not to do

Do not put the nose of your puppy in his stools, you would teach him to eat it.

Do not hit him with your hand, the hand is use to pet him and play.

Do not hit him with an object like a newspaper, you would damage its temperament and its trust in you.

You can be fed up, but never show it. You are the leader, so you are always in control. Master your voice and your gestures to show your dominance.


Watch your dog

With the habit of going out by the same door, your dog will learn to use this door. He will use several ways to communicate with you.

He could stand in front of the door.

He could turn in circle in front of the door.

Be crying in front of the door.

He could simply look at you with intensity.

Go to you and to the door repeatedly.

Bark at the door.

Jump on the door or scratch it.

All those ways are good, is it up to you to understand its language.
