All Munchkin are descendants from a female with short legs found by Sandra Hochenedel in 1938, to which she gave the name of Blackberry. This female was found pregnant and gave birth to several kittens. One of these kitten a male, named Toulouse became the foundation for a line in Louisiana. To have short legs is a spontaneous mutation and a dominant gene, for this reason the breed did develop rapidly.
