It is in the month of June 1981 in Lakewood, California that a kitten with unusual ears, found herself in front of the door of Joe and Grace Ruga. Grace with her good heart gave her a bowl of food on the porch, and this is the way that this kitten enter in their life. She was named Shulamith.

In December 1981, Shulamith had her first litter of kittens. In this litter were born four kittens, two of them had curled ears. A geneticist was contacted and confirmed that it was a dominant genetic trait and that no deformities were attached to this gene. This is a spontaneous mutation. So began the selection to develop the breed.

The American Curl is a medium size cat, it is alert with an elegant appearance and a soft facial expression. It is curious and playful. Both varieties of fur are accepted, shorthair and longhair. In the longhair variety, it’s not a thick fur, it’s rather long and silky with little grooming and no felt. All colours are found which add to the interest in this breed.

The temperament is of a curious cat who likes the company of humans. This is a cat that do not talk much, but when he does, the sounds are melodious. This is a soft and sweet companion.
